Beside The Wave Gallery

Beside The Wave Gallery was founded by the Dyer family in 1989. The gallery was run on the strengths of the family; the paintings of Ted Dyer and John Dyer and the management by Vivien and Lelsy Dyer. The gallery also strongly exhibited the work of Richard Tuff the partner of Lesly at the time and Joanne Short, John's wife.

The gallery quickly became one of Cornwall's most successful galleries and exhibited some of the county's most celebrated artists which we have listed below.

In addition to exhibiting paintings John Dyer designed the internationally known visual identity of the gallery and all printed catalogues and books until 2005.

John Dyer and Joanne Short lived for a period of time above the gallery (as did Richard Tuff) and this had an influence on their work as the gallery has fantastic views across Falmouth harbour.

In 2007 the gallery was sold and it is no longer owned or run by the Dyer family but still contunues to exhibit paintings and ceramics. Beside The Wave continues to operate in Falmouth, but exhibits a different range of more traditional landscape artists.

The contemporary colourist work of the Dyer family is now represented online by one of Cornwall's most exciting and successful online galleries, The John Dyer Gallery, and in Monaco and the Côte d'Azur by Galerie Monaco. Studio visits can also be arranged.

N.B. The work of Ted Dyer and Richard Tuff is still exhibited by Beside The Wave Gallery

Joan Gillchrest   Joan Gillchrest's vibrant, colourful and poetic paintings belong to the ongoing Cornish naïve tradition of painting. Gillchrest created her own unique style which was a product of design, tonal expression, atmosphere, and beautiful use of paint. She fused child-like innocence with highly sophisticated painting.

Jack Pender

Born in 1918
Died 1998

Jack Pender's subject-matter was largely his home fishing village of Mousehole, its boats and people. Aged 12, Pender had sat alongside Christopher Wood, watching him paint 'PZ134' and his work developed a direct and almost abstract quality.

Pender is one of West Cornwall's most notable native talents.

Fred Yates

Born in 1922
Died 2008

Fred Yates grew up in a suburb of Manchester. He is untutored, but paints from the heart. Fred paints pictutes from his surroundings, experinces and his past, with Manchester often appearing as a subject. For Fred beauty resided in "simplicity and a child's mind" and in 1969 Fred gave up teaching and moved to Cornwall to enable him to devote all his energy to painting. Fred Yates lived his final years in France.
