Darwin sailed around the world on HMS Beagle, a Tall Ship that set out from Plymouth and returned five years later to Falmouth in Cornwall.

184 Children around the UK have produced pictures based on Darwin's voyage & discoveries.

Intro Movie John Dyer Introduces the Art Competition with this video

"In Darwin's day, before photography, artists and especially painters would have been taken on voyages to depict the landscapes, flora and animals they encountered. We’re asking children to get creative and create a picture based on Darwin's voyage and his discoveries. This could be a painting of the Tall Ship HMS Beagle sailing into Falmouth or some other exotic location, or perhaps children could paint a picture of the animals at their local Zoo. The possibilities are endless!" John Dyer.

Please see our terms and conditions.

Below are some photos of the artwork on display at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth that resulted from our last competition. The exhibition was wonderfully curated by Milly Newman, the Exhibitions Development Assistant at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. We are planning to exhibit the Darwin Paintings in a similar way.
Thank you Milly.

184 Entries. View the art now

We have had 184 entries to the exhibition and most will be displayed in the National Maritime Museum during July in Cornwall. You can view all the entries online now. Click to view.

All of the entries have also been published in John Dyer's latest book ! Click for more details.

The competition has been judged and the winners should make contact with the gallery. If you have a Gold star or a Silver star we need your contact details to get your prizes to you. Gold star winners will now be exhibited at Falmouth Art Gallery in August and invited to a reception event on August 29th 6pm to 8pm.

A BIG thank you to all the children who entered the exhibition and to all the parents and teachers who encouraged and supported their work. We want creativity to be at the center of every childs life and believe that it is one of the vital ingredients of childhood.

If you have enjoyed the Darwin exhibition then click to have a look at our last exhibition gallery for the Tall Ships.
