John Dyer & Joanne Short
Resident artists for St Michael's Mount
All
of the paintings can now be purchased over the telephone.
The Private View on May
11th was a very busy event with collectors wading across
the causeway in the wild cornish weather to form a queue
to enter the exhibition. The event was an enormous success,
96 pasties eaten and lots of wine opened and we are very
grateful for the support and help of the entire team on
the Mount, the Island Café & the Godolphin
Arms that made all this possible.

"It
is a great pleasure to host this exhibition by John
Dyer and Joanne Short, which is a product of their
stay on St Michael's Mount during May last year. While
the island as a whole has been painted exhaustively
over the years, the gardens and grounds have received
much less attention. I am delighted therefore to see
the gardens given their due and depicted so vividly
in these paintings. It is a new venture for us to
hold an event like this in the Island Café
and I hope you enjoy the venue. The Café sits next to the entrance to the gardens, which I
hope you might visit also to see some of the subject
matter that inspired the artistic work on show."

As
a child I was told a story of St Michael's Mount being
a rock thrown into the sea by a giant. I believed in this
magical story for years and it is a sad moment when you
grow up and leave those magical dreams behind. This journey
has been a a return to childhood for us all, as the Mount
is definitely a magical place of childhood dreams; a place
where dreams don't disappear as you grow up. We spent
a fantastic time as a family on this fairy tale island
- perfect evenings in the garden watching the full moon
shimmering across still water with the castle rising into
the dark blue sky. Flowers and sculptural plants balance
on sheer rock faces before appearing to tumble down into
the sea, secret gardens and hidden pathways led us around
our own story book of ideas. While living on the island
we were lucky enough to feel part of this very special
island community which made us so welcome. Our time on
the island exploring and dreaming has resulted in this
exhibition of paintings which I hope you will see captures
the essence of the island, the sheer thrill of being alive
and the wonderment of being a child. It is, I believe,
one of our best collections of work
Exhibition dates: May 11th to June 1st 2007 The exhibition
is open from the evening of May 11th to June 1st 2007
during the normal opening hours of St Michael's Mount
and the Island Café. For details of these please see www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk

Things to be aware of
Disabled access
For
people who need assistance getting across the causeway
to view the exhibition a minibus will leave at approximately
5.30pm from the slipway on the beach. Places are very
limited so please do let us know if you require a place.
Tide
times
Due
to the tides we have about two hours for you to visit
the exhibition on May 11th. Please be on time and note
the following: The exhibition closes at approximately
7.30pm and you will need to leave before the tide comes
in as there are no boats off the island in the evening.
Garden
Tour
The
garden tour is offered on a first come first served basis.
If you wish to take the complimentary tour of the gardens
the tour will leave the Island Café at 4.45pm and will
last approximateluy 45mins. Many of the paths and steps
are steep or cobbled and some visitors may find them difficult.
Sensible footwear is advised. You will possibly need to
catch a boat over to join the garden tour.
Regrettably,
dogs are not allowed in the gardens. If at all possible,
we would ask you to leave dogs on the mainland as there
are no facilities for them on the island.

"The
space in the Island Café is beautiful with amazing
arches, windows on all sides and high ceilings. The brickwork
and light make this a natural gallery space."

"The
paintings of the Mount that John and Joanne have done
in the past are great: they really capture the lively,
colourful spirit of the place. We're all really looking
forward to working with them again, and seeing what they
come up with this year!"
