Two of the UK's most celebrated artists are working towards a major exhibition based on the Côte d'Azur & Hanbury Gardens in 2008.

The Hanbury garden has close links with the gardens of Cornwall and John Dyer and Joanne Short have been resident artists for many of Cornwall's most famous gardens.
John Dyer has worked as painter in residence for the famous Eden Project in the UK. Both artists have also worked as resident artists for the National Trust's St Michael's Mount and Tresco Abbey Gardens in the UK which are closely linked to the Giardini Hanbury.
Both artists have an international following and their work is held in public collections and museums.
During the artists' Hanbury residency they have produced an exciting new collection of contemporary paintings exploring the biodiversity and plant/people relationships of the garden and the Côte d'Azur.

"This is an amazing project for us, the Hanbury gardens have a unique place in Italian and British history and are a showcase for plant biodiversity which is of utmost importance to the planet. We hope that our paintings will capture the essence of this special place and will bring the important story of plant biodiversity to a wider audience. Working with Carolyn Hanbury at the gardens is an absolute pleasure and an enormous privilege."

& Projects I Eden
John Dyer has worked as artist in residence for:
John Dyer is one of the UK's most exciting and well known plein-air painters. His work is collected internationally and his paintings have been the subject of popular television programmes and a wide range of merchandise.
John's environmental work studying the ethnobotanical relationships of plants with the Eden Project has firmly placed his work at the forefront of contemporary art and he is one of the UK's best known international environmental artists, having worked with leading scientific organisations across the globe.
"There is an innocence and freshness to John Dyer's art that follows a tradition in Cornwall that includes the work of Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Fred Yates and Bryan Pearce. Rather than trying to record what he sees, John sets out to capture the 'essence' of his subject. The 'essence' of seagulls, cats, dogs, bobbing boats, or exploding fireworks communicate far more strongly through John's brushstrokes than they would if drawn more traditionally. It is this ability to capture the 'essence' of what is important that seems to appeal to those who have shown great vision and originality in their own careers, such as Tim Smit, Alan Titchmarsh or Kim Wilde."

Joanne I News
Joanne Short has worked as artist in residence for:
Robert Dorrien-Smith, The Tresco Estate.
The St Aubyn Family, St Michael's Mount, UK.
Carolyn Hanbury, Giardini Hanbury, Italy.
Joanne Short is one of Cornwall's most established artists & her paintings are truly unique in their style and construction. They bring to us a strong but gentle view of her world and focus on the beauty, pattern and life that is found in the landscape. She featured in the ITV series 'The Painted Garden' and many collectors marveled at the way she confidently commits paint to her canvas en plein-air.
"They have that rare quality of being able to transport me to those magical places of holiday dreams, magical light and brilliant flowers. They are optimistic without being misty-optic"
Alan Titchmarsh MBE
Brief History of the Hanbury Gardens
The Hanbury Botanic Gardens of La Mortola were founded in 1867 by Sir Thomas Hanbury, assisted by his brother Daniel who created his garden of exotic plants which carne from all parts of the world. Until his death in 1907 Sir Thomas helped the inhabitants in every possible way from La Mortola to Ventimiglia and even as far as Alassio and gave his name to the Istituto Botanico of the University of Genova. His great interest in the botanical world encouraged him to donate some land near London where the famous Wisley Garden was founded of the Royal Horticultural Society. When Thomas died, his work was carried on by his son and lady Dorothy who were both garden enthusiasts The Hanbury Botanic Gardens were sold to the Italian State in 1960, which are at present being managed by the University of Genoa; whilst the Faculty of Science is concerned with the scientific side, the Superintendence for Architectural and Environmental Liguria Estate covers the maintenance of architectural buildings and structures.
