Once upon a time there was a cat called Sylvester. Sylvester was very cheeky sometimes, especially in this story. Sylvester had a sensible owner, which is just the opposite of him. Sylvester’s owner was called Chloe. Chloe had long, dark hair and clear blue eyes. Sylvester was black-and-white, with grass green eyes. One day, just before the fireworks went off and the tall ships came in, the streets were loaded with people busying around to get a good view of the sea and sky.
Sylvester and Chloe were playing hide-and-seek, which as you can probably imagine, it was very, very, very easy to find a place to hide that no-one could find you in a million years.
Sylvester was quite good at hiding. He decided to hide at the top of one of the colourful palm trees, but even he couldn’t see the seagull eyeing him curiously from overhead. He scrambled up the rough-barked palm tree and sneakily hid between two of the fresh green leaves.
Meanwhile, Chloe had just finished counting and had started looking for Sylvester. She certainly didn’t know where to look! She searched everywhere, well, everywhere except at the top of a palm tree!
After a while, Sylvester began to feel impatient. “Come on,” he thought, “even I could find a speck of dust up in this place! I didn’t mean to make it this hard!”
Suddenly, he spotted the seagull swooping down to him! He tried to cry out for help, but all that came out was a tiny “Mew!” despite his desperate efforts. Before you could say ‘Tiddlywinks’ the seagull had him up on the highest pole of a tall ship in a trice. Sylvester was trapped!
Chloe, at that time, had given up. ”OK, Sylvester, you win!” the frightened girl kept on shouting anxiously. She began to feel slightly worried after a while. What if Sylvester was lost? What would she do then?!?!?
Sylvester was beginning to feel scared. He could hear Chloe’s yelling, but was too worried to reply.
Suddenly, somebody in the crowd cried out, ‘Hey, what’s that black-and white thing on top of that tall ship over there? Is it a seagull?’
Chloe and all the other people turned to look. Sylvester smiled, grateful that they had finally noticed him.
This was Chloe’s only chance to find Sylvester. “No! THAT’s not a SEAGULL!!!” She yelled out in delight. “That’s my Sylvester!” Before anyone could stop her, she dived in the freezing ice-cold sea, in only her polka-dotted buttoned dress and leggings. Past the seals she went, crying tears of joy. Soggy-wet, she scrambled on board the tall ship which Sylvester was on. Ignoring the sailor’s warnings completely, she carelessly started to stagger herself up the riggings of the high mast. “Don’t look down,” she told herself, “Do anything but don’t look down!” She was nearly half-way now, on the third/fourth sail out of the 7 there were. “Nearly there!” She thought, “Not far to go now!”
Before you could blink, she was up at the top of the tall ship, cradling a black and white meowing ball of fur in her arms. “Now, to get down.” She stood deep in thought for a minute or two, one arm on the pole and the other rocking Sylvester gently.
She carefully let her arm go, watching the sails as she fell, hoping to grab on to one of the lowest banners so she could lower herself into the sea without making a big splash. She grabbed hold of the last banner with a tight grip so she wouldn’t slip and fall, and carefully lowered herself onto the ship’s deck. One of the sailors kindly picked up his phone and rang a lifeboat to take Sylvester and Chloe to shore, so Sylvester didn’t have to get wet.
Off to shore they went, the wind flapping in Chloe’s hair and Sylvester’s fur. Everybody cheered. “SYL-VE-STER!” they shouted, “CHLO-E!” the yelling was deafening. People even had made bright, colourful, home-made banners with their names on them, in order for a giant celebration
When they got to shore, Chloe thanked the man whom was at the wheel and said her farewells. Tired after all the exciting events that day, Sylvester wearily settled down on a comfy red-brick wall to watch the fireworks, while Chloe pointed out where they had been – on which exact tall ship – to a journalist with a telescope.

Sleeping in a tiny, old, dusty, box I was lonely and afraid, the box was as dark as the night sky. Feeling scared I stared up at the thick brown masking tape … I felt I was in a frozen world. I kept asking myself “where was I?” A sharp warm hand reached into the dark gloomy box. I could hear birds tweeting. I could smell fresh air as broad daylight crept into the box.
The hand pulled me out, as rough as a wrestler, onto a little stand in the green wavy grass. Waiting in a trance I saw the bright yellow golden sun like a runny egg yolk as hot as a bubbling saucepan. The sun ran away over the beautiful meadows. After five minutes I smelt burning as five other fireworks with nervous faces got placed next to me, how would you feel?
Night fell suddenly as I worked my way up into the colourful bright sky with big bangs pop and whizzes. I wondered what colour I would be. Up in the sky I could see joyful, happy seals swimming in the calm blue crystal sea. The white baggy traditional flags took all the pride in themselves. I was shooting up and up like a rocket! People dancing with bright red colourful dresses like enthusiastic parrots. I could hear laughter and clapping. Suddenly POP! I was a brilliant bright blue like the vibrant sea itself. But then I died out with no more sparkle, my fifteen minutes of fame was over.
I woke; I’m in a dusty, cold and battered box. I saw another nervous firework next to me shuddering together to keep warm like a pack of puppies keeping warm from the cold. Anxiously I heard loud, booming footsteps echo through the box I was in. A man with rope opened the box lid quickly and grabbed forcefully the frightened fireworks and walked outside. He put us down on a stands and walked off limping. I heard annoying shouts of people as I saw they were behind a gate, the smell of fried food wrinkled up my nose as I looked at it with my jaw-open.
The gruff, mean looking man came out again but with matches that shone like diamonds plus dynamite that was ready to pounce on me any second now. The man shoved rope around me and I gulped as I saw the light, glowing, fierce spark of the match stick. “Would, I survive?” I said slowly in my head. I felt the match light on the rope fizzes as I shot up into the dull air like a raging rocket! I filled the air with happiness. My friends shot up and whizzed into the air like shooting stars. I saw the massive tall ships and small ships with bright flags waving about. There were sky-diving seagulls, dancing seals, beautiful stars and the colourful town below. Cornish sea pirates playing rhythmic music to a beat. The people clapping, screaming in joy.
Suddenly one of my friends began to fall out of the sky drifting into dust and disappeared. Then all of my friends began to scream and turn into dust as well, as I turned to dust, I smiled, I’ve had a happy life.
For this afternoon I am stuck in a big, dark and gloomy box. I smell the disgusting fish guts outside of the box. Later on the van door opens and I get chucked inside with the other fireworks.
Then we take a journey to Falmouth and I say to the driver…
“Hey what are we doing in Falmouth?”
There was no response. About a minute after there was still no response the van door opened and they took me out of the box and wheeled me to the quay. Then they put me on a stand with about 100 more fireworks and they attached a piece of rope on fire.
“Woah what are you doing?” I said but it was too late…
Suddenly, as soon as I knew it I was running through the air like a cheetah. I could see the tall ships sails’ flapping in the wind from side to side. Then I saw a few seals swimming around in the crystal blue sea.
I came down as a dusty thing and could hardly see anything, then a few seconds later I was dead.
Quietly I sat (at around 5:10pm) in a big, dry and old big box with five others, however the other fireworks were fast asleep, so it was just me. I smelt damp in the small box. I was waiting for it to happen because I had friends that told me about it, I waited and waited until…
I heard a shuffle-I felt it too. I saw a glimpse of light as a pair of hands slowly opened the box. Suddenly a face looked at me; it was a man, so I looked away. “Get it out of the box, we are starting!” Said the man. The younger boy said cheekily “why don’t you do it?” the older man shot him a glance.
Next I was put on the floor carefully, I was cold but I tried to close my eyes and go to sleep so I wouldn’t know a thing. Scared, I looked around and saw my friends who were now awake. I waved and they waved back.
Suddenly a rope was attached to me as I was nearly asleep. I saw my friends shoot up in the air like a rocket. I jumped millimeters. I felt as controlled as a dog on a lead going for a walk.
Someone lit the rope, I smelt burned rope. I heard people chatting in the audience. They started to count down…10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1…!
I shot up into the air and saw a tall ship called Topaz. Two seals going Arg! Arg! Arg! I saw dogs, birds, cats. People in the water waved at me. A spiky cactus in the distance. Slowly I fell down.
I’m in a wooden box, it is pitch black, I’ve only got a small space to move. I feel like I’m a crisp in a crisp packet. I’m all scrunched up and can hardly move. I’m bouncing up and down as the truck is moving. I am woken up by light, it is like am I going into a new world. Quickly, one by one, me and all of the other fireworks are getting pulled out.
The sun is getting pulled down in the sky and behind the cliff, it is like it is hiding! All of a sudden the stars are running across the sky and spreading them selves like jam on toast. An hour later I’m placed on the grass so gently like I’m a fragile piece of glass.
Suddenly I hear scratching (what’s happening?) “Help me” I whimpered to myself all I could see was a flash of light, is it lightening? I can feel heat on my toes, slowly the flame is crawling up the rope getting me ready to be shot into the sky as fast as a bullet! Seconds later…
As gracefully as a ballet dancer I’m in the beautiful bright blue sky. Below me I can see the crystal sea sparkling, and the tall ships rocking like a rocking chair! I can hear the group of excited people cheering as we are in the sky, the seals dancing in the waves. I can hear the clock ticking every second, the dog howling like a horn. The last thing I can hear is a person playing the accordion!
Then slowly I fade away like a piece of dust being blown and never to be seen again.
Jim sighted a cat alone, abandoned by its master – no-one looking for it, no-one tending it. Jim, pasty in hand, walked cautiously towards the frightened creature, broke off a meaty chunk, held it out and waited. The cat crept forward, its pads pressing on the ground lightly, sparingly knocked the meat from his hand and chewed on it curiously, tugging at the juicy delight.
After that he took the cat home and as they walked the fireworks started reflecting off the giant sails down in the harbour. Sailors climbed the tall strong masts of their proud ships. The water, dazzling on the seals and dolphins, gleamed in the stars. Cries of “Anchor down” and all the bangs, whizzes and fizzes greeted him on the way to the door.
Then the music of the sea commenced, swishes and crashes of the waves on the pebbles, climbing their way on to the rocks. The squarks of seagulls crying at passers-by. A dog’s harsh bark sends the seagulls flying towards the moon……
