‘The Day I Saw the Tall Ships’ by Bow, Age 9 Years

The Day I Saw the Tall Ships

When I woke up, I charged downstairs. There waiting for me was my dog, Dug the Pug. For breakfast, I ate my croissant with jam on it. “Bye Mum!” I said.
“Don’t forget your money and sun cream!” shouted mum.

I jumped on my skateboard and went to meet my friend, Joby, at the harbour. “There are a lot of people eating lot’s of pasties, candyfloss and ice cream,” I said with hungry eyes! As I looked around I could see the tall ships starting to make their way into the harbour. They were extraordinary. They were slightly rocking backwards and forwards on the waves and the crew were sailing them very carefully near each other. One of the sailors was my dad and it made me very happy to know he was safe and sound. I would be hugging him and telling him about what had been happening.
Me and Joby ate so much candyfloss that our tongues were red as a strawberry. Next we played on the beach and in the sea. When it was 9:00, we sat on the harbour wall, listening to BOOMS, WHIZZES and FIZZES of the fireworks. We saw gold, green red and blue shoot into the sky. “I can’t wait until next year!”

‘Tall Ships’ by Kieran, Age 9 Years

One day a boy called Jeff was waiting for his father to come home. He was a sailor on a tall ship and had been away for three months and his ship was arriving in the harbour the following day.

Jeff was extremely excited because the town was preparing to celebrate the ships coming home. They were decorating the town with bunting and sweet smelling roses. The town was full of people busily passing by. There was a joyful atmosphere even though it was very crowded.

That night Jeff could hardly sleep. He couldn’t wait till the next morning when his father would be home and he could hug him and tell him how much he missed him. He was looking forward to seeing the fireworks light up the night sky as they fizzed, popped and whizzed…

‘The Angel Boat’ by Leanna, Age 11Years

I woke up and looked out of my window from my cosy bed. There were so many colourful ships passing my window. Outside was busy and people were bustling and jostling to get a good view of the boats. There were rides and people selling candy floss but my eye was on one of the boats, a beautiful pine brown one with a figurehead at the bow of the boat shaped like an angel dancing down from heaven.
I smiled and heaved a sigh of relief. My Mum and Dad were on that boat. They waved to me and I wildly waved back. I was staying with my auntie and uncle. They were very kind to me but I still missed my parents.
I ran out of my door, forgetting my coat in my haste, but I didn’t care I would soon be hugging my Mum and Dad, I was so excited. People pushed me but I pushed them back, everywhere was a hive of activity, there were people who were selling sweets, who pulled me and asked me if I wanted sweets but I ran and they let me go. There were fishermen who blocked my way and asked me if I wanted fish but I dodged past them and carried on running. I was going to see something better than these colours, I was even going to see something better than sweets and chocolates. I was going to see my Mum and Dad.
At last I eventually reached the harbour, I pushed to the front and right in front of my eyes was my Mum and Dad!

‘Diary Entry’ by Sophie, Age 8 Years

Dear Diary,
I woke up and I was so excited. I went down stairs to eat my breakfast and when I had finished, I went to meet up with my friends. Me Ceri, Jessie and Abby all went down to Falmouth harbour. As we all walked along we saw all the amazing tall ships getting ready for the show.

The tall ships and small ships were stunning and the fireworks were exploding across the moonlit sky. All of this was very exciting; I could not take my eyes off it for one second. It was the best thing I had ever seen because of the bursting colours and joyful sounds of the sea shanties and sails.

‘Tall Ships’ by Stan, Age 10 Years

It was the biggest day of my life. There was going to be fireworks and people around the out skirts of the harbour cheering us on. As we sang a sea shanty with the beats of the drum; we began to enter the gates of the harbour. The crew had taken the sails down and stood on the masts. Waving their hats at the crowd everybody had a smile on their face ; it was a mind blowing experience, a day I will never forget…

‘The Sailor’s Tale’ by Charlotte, Age 11Years

I was walking home from work early this evening, shattered from a long day’s work, when I heard my friend yelling my name. I went over to see what all the commotion was about and it turned out the sailors were coming home. I would finally get to see my husband! All of the loneliness and despair had left my heart immediately and instead there was love, peace and joy.
I ran down to the harbour with my friend dying to see a glimpse of him and excited to meet our loved ones. As well as everyone else we were cheering and screaming. For months they had been gone. We didn’t know if they were dead, if they were sick or even if they were perfectly well. The fact that we hadn’t got a letter saying any of that and the ships were coming in meant they were safe. Me and my friend agreed with each other we would go to see our husbands and loved ones. We would go home get our life savings, then go out and celebrate all night. We would go to a fancy restaurant, sing sea shanties at the harbour and this was the best night of our lives.

‘Tall Ships’ by Sam, Age 11Years

One night, at quarter to twelve, The Tall Ships came in. Fireworks exploded and laughter filled the air. People were pushing and pulling to get a good view. Fishermen were selling fish and shellfish behind their stalls, calling their wares. The ships were in all different colours but my eye was fixed upon one great oak ship with a figurehead of quartz. Her masts blue, her hull yellow, she wore all the countries upon her sail, her decks filled with happy sailors singing sea shanties. She was beautiful, she sailed agilely across the water.

All my sadness of my brother at sea drained out of me, knowing he was safe. I was filled with joy and happiness, now knowing peace was around me. Then I saw a lovely sight; I saw a boy, probably no older than eleven playing the accordion and he was the heart of the music. Without thinking I began to dance and cheer; I felt a great weightlessness in myself. I felt proud to be here, still the fireworks went off and by now it was 1:15 am and I was exhausted, so I went home.
I had a great night.

‘An Amazing Day’ by Alfie, Age 11Years

Dear Diary,
This morning, I woke up and put on my clothes on what seemed a normal day. As I glanced through my window, to my amazement, I saw a shiny pole twinkling in the sun light whistling past, I wondered what this was all about then I heard 3 very loud bang’s one after another, “BANG!BANG!BANG!”
The penny just dropped. It had been 200 years since the cargo ships had started coming into the harbour. All of a sudden I felt young glaring at the beautiful but old ships.
There was one ship however which caught my eye. It had a golden angel on the front which looked like she was dancing gracefully in the blazing sun. It was beautiful.
There were also other people bustling and jostling to get a good look at these old ships sailing peacefully into the harbour. There were people everywhere cramming into stalls, running to the luxurious sweet shops, but right by the cliff edge was the biggest croud of all because they could not take their eyes off the legendary ships.

‘Dear Diary’ by James, Age 9 Years

Dear diary,
Yesterday morning I raced down stairs and ate my breakfast as fast as I could. I put my shoes on and off I went down the hills to my friend Ceri’s house. She was already waiting for me; we were walking down to the docks when I heard seagulls squawking.

We walked down to the harbour. I saw the tall ships coming in, the closer they got I could see the bright colours of the masts and hear the crew singing sea shanties. As I listened I could smell the wonderful smell of pasties wafting from the bakery; it made me hungry. We walked into the bakery and bought two large pasties. I took one bite, it was… SPECTACULAR; mouth watering joy. They were the best pasties ever.

‘Tall Ships’ by Joby, Age10 Years

It is 7.00pm on the day the tall ships sail into the harbour. The carnival has closed ready for the celebration of the tall ships arriving in Falmouth. As I walk to the harbour I can see the crowd laughing, singing and dancing with great smiles on their faces.
I ran down to the water front, and to my surprise I got to the front row. A sailor invited me on board the ship to sail. It was an amazing opportunity so I said “yes”. I got on the ship and we sailed 5 miles and back.
We realised there was a hole in the lower deck. Luckily I sighted a lifeboat. I found a flare in a box and shot it directly up at the sky. We started blocking the hole with crates. Finally the lifeboat arrived. We were saved.
