The Background to the Painting
John Dyer worked for over two weeks on this painting. It all began with a walk the artist took from Harbour Terrace in Falmouth to Falmouth Art Gallery. On the walk the artist looked for the essence and structure of the town and imagined the harbour filled with Tall Ships. The painting brings together many events and memories from the artist’s past and also allows us a glimpse into his vision of the future.

“I like to build an image in my mind that references the past, present and future. This image forms the basis of the painting, but it isn’t something that I have to stick too. The painting also has a mind of its own, I let it have a voice to guide me. I use my memories, imagination, mind drawings and photographs to put a painting like this together. It is always a very exciting and exhilarating experience. When I am painting a new piece like this I am time travelling.” John Dyer.
