As the night closed in, the sea started to settle. All was silent, all was calm. Then the boats came into sight. The silence was disturbed as an eruption of sound was created. The parcels had arrived. As the boats docked fireworks lit up the darkness. People descended like prowling to see what all the fuss was about and there right before their eyes was all they could ever of dreamed off. People were happy, people were smiling as they claimed what was theirs. Families were scattered all across the docks, huddled together.

With a bag slung over my shoulder
And the night sky sooty and smouldered
I wade out to my sailing-singer,
Wave-whipper, fortune-bringer
And by the light of the lonely sky
A star to steer her by.
Once aboard, I stare up
Into the world of the sails above
Into the acres of the shaking white
Into the world of the high flight
And by the light of the lonely sky
A star to steer her by.
Like a spotlight it showers the boat
Shimmering in the night, all afloat
It’s a wonder to watch, no seagulls’ caw
And the waves gently lapping at the shore
And by the light of the lonely sky
A star to steer her by.
‘Sailor’ by Dylan Cole, Age 10 Years
As I stand at the tip of my boat I look out
at the carnival with people laughing
and running around me, I capture this
moment in my mind as this only happens
once for me.
My heart is beating fast, I will land in
the harbour as my boat is very fast.
I am approaching and I’m nearly there
I won’t forget this for however long I live.
I am here and now I will join the carnival.
