‘At The Tall Ships Day’ By Aysha Cattran, Age 12 Years

At the warm Tallships day there are …

People swimming in the bay
seagulls flying around all day

People looking out to sea
people applauding at the view of the deep blue sea

Animals everywhere running about
all in the excitement of no doubt

Cats and Dogs run and play
whilst people are waving flags all the way

The fireworks fizz and pop
whilst children jump and flop

Sailors shouting and doing jigs
up on 30 foot rigs

The boats creak but no one shrieks

The rat scurry in a rush and hurry

Busy towns noise echoes in the shores
The rolling turquoise seas
gives people a tease

So people swim in the bay
through the Tallships day

All the time the seaside accordian
plays the a wistful tune at the end of the day.

‘The Regatta’ by Samson, Age 9 Years

The Regatta

The fireworks boom and light up the sky,
You can hear the drunken sailors singing a shanty,
The wooden pier is full of dancing people,
The man playing the accordion beside John Dyer’s shop,
As all the bands stop the people start walking home,
All the cups and cans left on the road and the pavement,
For tomorrow’s rubbish collection.

‘A Firework’s Flight’ by Ellie Gorfin, Age 10 Years

I’m in a wooden box, it is pitch black, I’ve only got a small space to move. I feel like I’m a crisp in a crisp packet. I’m all scrunched up and can hardly move. I’m bouncing up and down as the truck is moving. I am woken up by light, it is like am I going into a new world. Quickly, one by one, me and all of the other fireworks are getting pulled out.
The sun is getting pulled down in the sky and behind the cliff, it is like it is hiding! All of a sudden the stars are running across the sky and spreading them selves like jam on toast. An hour later I’m placed on the grass so gently like I’m a fragile piece of glass.
Suddenly I hear scratching (what’s happening?) “Help me” I whimpered to myself all I could see was a flash of light, is it lightening? I can feel heat on my toes, slowly the flame is crawling up the rope getting me ready to be shot into the sky as fast as a bullet! Seconds later…
As gracefully as a ballet dancer I’m in the beautiful bright blue sky. Below me I can see the crystal sea sparkling, and the tall ships rocking like a rocking chair! I can hear the group of excited people cheering as we are in the sky, the seals dancing in the waves. I can hear the clock ticking every second, the dog howling like a horn. The last thing I can hear is a person playing the accordion!
Then slowly I fade away like a piece of dust being blown and never to be seen again.

‘Tall Ships’ by Theo, Age 8 Years

Seeing from a tall ship,
Seeing fireworks swooping like seagulls,
And fancy people dancing.

I come down to shore,
I see ships; see clouds and also shops,
I see this guy playing around with an accordion.

People everywhere,
I see a clock tower,
And here it smells like fish…

I see a guy just in swimming trunks,
I see everyone in the harbour,
I see everyone enjoying themselves,
Everybody seeing the fireworks crackle.

‘Tall Ships’ by Sam, Age 11Years

One night, at quarter to twelve, The Tall Ships came in. Fireworks exploded and laughter filled the air. People were pushing and pulling to get a good view. Fishermen were selling fish and shellfish behind their stalls, calling their wares. The ships were in all different colours but my eye was fixed upon one great oak ship with a figurehead of quartz. Her masts blue, her hull yellow, she wore all the countries upon her sail, her decks filled with happy sailors singing sea shanties. She was beautiful, she sailed agilely across the water.

All my sadness of my brother at sea drained out of me, knowing he was safe. I was filled with joy and happiness, now knowing peace was around me. Then I saw a lovely sight; I saw a boy, probably no older than eleven playing the accordion and he was the heart of the music. Without thinking I began to dance and cheer; I felt a great weightlessness in myself. I felt proud to be here, still the fireworks went off and by now it was 1:15 am and I was exhausted, so I went home.
I had a great night.
