Hints on Painting from John Dyer
• Visualise what your painting will look like – is it night or day ? What’s in the foreground, background etc. What is it about ?
• Do a drawing
• Use good brushes – thin ones for detail and wide ones for the background
• You might paint on your drawing or just use the drawing as reference
• You may need additional Tall Ships reference
• Try different mediums & materials – you might find watercolour or pastel is your thing
• If you don’t have any paint then try collage, pastels or other materials
• Don’t expect to finish your piece of art in one go – I took 14 days to paint mine !
• Don’t be sad if your first painting isn’t great – just try again – it’s a learning process. I have now painted hundred of paintings and each time I improve and learn. Sometimes mistakes are the best things as it speeds up your learning process.
• You might do a few paintings/pictures – then choose the best one to send us
Enjoy !

The Background to the Falmouth Painting

John Dyer worked for over two weeks on this painting. It all began with a walk the artist took from Harbour Terrace in Falmouth to Falmouth Art Gallery. On the walk the artist looked for the essence and structure of the town and imagined the harbour filled with Tall Ships. The painting brings together many events and memories from the artist’s past and allows us a glimpse into his vision of the future.

“I like to build an image in my mind that references the past, present and future. This image forms the basis of the painting, but it isn’t something that I have to stick too. The painting also has a mind of its own, I let it have a voice to guide me. I use my memories, imagination, mind drawings and photographs to put a painting like this together. It is always a very exciting and exhilarating experience. When I am painting a new piece like this I am time travelling.” John Dyer.
